The recorded history of Haiti commenced since 5th Dec 1492 when the famous explorer and European Navigator Christopher Columbus landed at Haiti. This settlement was the first European settlement in the New World and it was called La Navidad. Christopher Columbus named the island La Isla Espanola in honor of his Spanish sponsors.

The Spanish encounter opened the gates of other imperialist countries. After Spain, France established her colonies in this rich and resourceful region. Till date Haiti shows French influence on the lifestyle and culture of her people.

Republique D’Haiti (Republic of Haiti) commemorated this event by issuing two stamps of 1 and 2 Gourde respectively. The stamp features a ship being anchored at a port of Haiti.
